We can bring to life almost any look you dream up! Not quite sure what that means? In this blog post, we take a closer look at a sampling of the various options that are available.
Common Customization Options from Kloter Farms
At Kloter Farms, we know that every customer has unique needs and preferences. That’s why we strive to provide a breadth and depth of customization options for each of our products. This allows customers to achieve a personalized look for every piece they purchase. Some of the most common finish options that we offer include the following:
- Paint & Stain Combinations
Keep in mind that these are not the only options. Additionally, not all customizations are available for all furniture pieces because the different shops we work with may have their own techniques and finishes. This is yet another hallmark of the Kloter Farms brand. When you partner with us for your home furniture needs, you know you’re getting an heirloom piece that will meet and exceed your expectations. Let’s take a closer look at each of the options for colors and finishes, along with why they’re popular.
And remember: If you still have questions about your color and finish options after reading this guide, don’t hesitate to reach out to us. A member of the Kloter Farms team will be happy to walk you through your options and answer any questions you may have about our furniture or the customization process.
The most common way to finish a piece of fine furniture is by using a stain, which protects the surface of the furniture while showcasing the wood’s natural grain. Stains come in many different shades and can be custom blended to match an existing piece of furniture.
The stain hues available at Kloter Farms are manifold and often influenced by the latest home décor trends. Take grey, for example – this calm neutral has become increasingly popular in the interior design world and can now be used as a furniture stain. This allows you to see the beautiful grain of the wood through the richness of the grey stain of your choice.
Deep rich charcoal and almost-black stains are also available, as seen in our stained and varnished Colonial Pine Coffee Table. The stain you choose influences not only the final look of the piece itself but of the room it resides in as well. Whatever the tone, color, or overall aesthetic you have in mind, it can be achieved with a high-quality stain.
Another trend that we often see is what we call a “stain-on-stain combination.” This is when we stain one part of a piece of furniture in one color and accent another portion in a different shade. The result? Interesting and eye-catching contrast and a truly one-of-a-kind piece.

“My Way. My Style.” That’s our motto here at Kloter Farms, and we believe that our customers should have the option to “Turn on the color!” if they wish. We love to see customers come in and use their creativity to design original furniture pieces or entire collections for their homes. From vibrant yellows and invigorating oranges to soothing blues and evocative purples, bold pops of color can add visual appeal to any living space. Meanwhile, neutral hues have a more tranquil feel.
While paint colors can be mixed and matched for a dynamic look, many homeowners go a simpler route by choosing a single color for a dramatic effect. For example, a bedroom with all-black furniture looks classic yet sleek. On the other hand, all-white furniture can create a breezy, relaxed aesthetic in a living room or family room.
When it comes to paint colors, if Sherwin Williams has it, we have it. And we mean it when we say the options are endless.
3. Paint and Stain Combinations
If you’re unsure whether you want to use a stain or paint on your custom Kloter Farms furniture, we’ve got great news for you: It’s not necessarily an either/or decision. In many cases, you can do both! Incorporating both a stain and paint into your furniture customization project allows you to select a color that really “pops” while still embracing the natural beauty of the wood. Many homeowners go this route when choosing a dining table or kitchen island with seating. For example, you might consider painting the base or legs of your table or island, while staining the top for a natural wood look.
Again, it’s up to you how dramatic or understated you’d like the final product to be. While there’s an inherent contrast between paint and stains, the colors you choose can further enunciate the difference or have a more subtle impact.
Considering your desired look and feel for the space can help inform a particular paint and stain combination. For example, if you’re envisioning a piece that will be a focal point in a room, a bolder combo may be more appropriate. Meanwhile, if you’re looking for something that will blend into its surroundings harmoniously, you may prefer a design with less contrast.
Who doesn’t love the exquisite look of distressed furniture? Unfortunately, finding an antique piece that meets your expectations in terms of its look and condition can be challenging. One of the major benefits of ordering custom-made furniture from Kloter Farms is the option to get the aesthetic of an antique piece on modern furniture through distressing. A variety of techniques can add a charming and elegant aged look to a brand-new piece of furniture. The result is a “best of both worlds” solution for homeowners who want the antique look without the headache and hassle of finding vintage pieces.
Many of the woodshops that we partner with offer different levels of distressing. For example, we provide three different distressing options for our own furniture (with the exception of our pine pieces) to keep things simple: light, medium, and heavy. Just as the descriptions suggest, each level has different degrees of distress and burnishing.
Again, it’s important to note that while some woodshops offer different levels of distressing, others may not. It is our experience that when the distressing of a piece is left up to the interpretation of the artisan crafting it, the final product is almost always a beautiful and inspired work of art.
Pine: Distress vs. Antiquing
A question that we often receive from customers in our stores and via our website is, “What is the difference in the finish options for distressed pine furniture vs. antiqued pine furniture?”
The two photos below are a great example of this. While the colors themselves may differ, the general concept holds true across the different levels of distressing.
Note that the black 32-inch corner hutch in antiqued pine has a heavy amount of “rub-through” and burnishing around the doors, edges, and knobs. Conversely, the white 18-inch corner hutch in distressed pine shows only mild distressing on the knob and at the edges.
